Thank you to everyone who applied for an SRF Vacation Scholarship. Applications are now being considered and applicants will be informed of the decision by the end of April.
Applications for the Society of Biology Undergraduate Research Bursaries remain open until 31st March - see below.
As part of its policy of furthering research and education in the biology of reproduction, the Society for Reproduction and Fertility invites applications from undergraduate students for a limited number of Vacation Scholarships. The objective of these scholarships is to enable particularly promising students to work during the summer vacation in university departments or research institutes on research projects related to reproduction, fertility and lactation in humans and other animals.
Students should normally be in the second (if on a three year course) or second/third (if on a four year course) year of their undergraduate degree studies and may be considering research as a career. Ideally, projects should be undertaken in the summer vacation prior to the student entering their final year. Projects can be a maximum of 8 weeks long, and include a stipend funded at the same rate as the Wellcome Trust summer studentships (£180 per week (£190 per week in London)), plus an award of £750 to be paid to the host laboratory to cover the cost of consumables for the project.
Scholarships are not available for students to undertake projects which form part of their normal degree course. Novel, stand alone projects are encouraged.
A report, comprising of a single side of A4, must be submitted, detailing the findings of their investigation (further details will be sent successful candidates). This report may be published in the SRF newsletter or on the website. If a report is not received by the end of December, the project supervisor will become ineligible for future vacation scholarships for 3 years.
The SRF would strongly encourage the award recipients (especially the student, but if not, the supervisor) to present their results at the following annual SRF meeting if possible. Registration, accommodation and reasonable expenses will be covered for any student presenting their scholarship data at this conference.
Only one scholarship will be awarded per student over the course of their undergraduate study and normally only one per department in any one year. Projects supervisors MUST be a fully paid-up SRF member.
The deadline for applications will be the 16th of March, and applicants will be informed of the decision by the end of April. Applications are only accepted via the online system.
Society of Biology Undergraduate Research Bursaries
The Society of Biology, in conjunction with other learned societies and with the support of the Nuffield Foundation, is running an undergraduate research bursary scheme to enable undergraduate students in the field of biomedicine or biology to undertake summer research projects. As the SRF is a member organisation of the Society of Biology, SRF members are entitled to apply for these awards. The bursaries provide support for the student at a rate of £180 per week, for a period of between 6 and 8 weeks.
SRF members who have applied for an SRF vacation scholarship may also apply for a Society of Biology studentship (however, if both are successful, only one will be awarded). Please note that the eligibility criteria, and those against which the project, student and supervisor will be assessed for Society of Biology studentships, differ from those used for assessing SRF vacation scholarships. Medical students, and medical students studying for intercalated science degrees, are not eligible for these awards.
Deadline for applications is
31st March 2012. More details, and application forms are available at the Society of Biology website by
